Some concept work I finished recently for Iain McCaig’s post apocalyptic Little Red Riding Hood project at Spectrum Fantastic Art Live in Kansas City, MO.

Thanks to Stillman & Birn for creating these great little watercolor sketchbooks I bought at their booth at the event. And to Justin Sweet for telling me about them!

I’ve spent the last three days at Spectrum Fantastic Art Live 2 in Kansas City going face-to-face with the likes of Iain McCaig, Justin Sweet, and Vance Kovacs. Got a lot of positive feedback on my work, and learned a ton just watching these guys do their thing. Truly priceless.

I’ve been wanting to attempt a portrait in watercolor for some time now, and after seeing Justin’s watercolor skills in person I was inspired to give it a go. Here is a little 9x12 study of our Founding Father George Washington, after Gilbert Stuart 1795.

Plein air during the awesome weather today in Kansas City. I’ve really got to get a stool. I am at war with the ants, and my only weapon is the alcohol-filled atomizer I carry with me for painting.10x14 watercolor on paper.

Late Night watercolor still life. No reason, just doing my art push-ups. If I was a gallery artist, I’d be forced to call this “midnight refractions,” or “burning the glass at both ends.” Thankfully that is not the case…

Week 2 and 3 from the illustrated sermon series titled The Miracles of Jesus by Kyle Turner http://thecausekc.com/past-sermons/. The first depicts the healing of the paralyzed man lowered through the roof at Capernaum (Matthew 9). The second is based on the account of the resurrection of Lazarus of Bethany found in John 11. Sumi on Bristol 9x12.

What an amazing day at Planet Comicon today in Kansas City! I got my photo taken with the original Black Ranger from The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, William Jones. Hyyah!!! I also had the privilege of meeting Eric Shanower, the creator of Age of Bronze. The books are incredibly well-researched—the obvious result of obsessive dedication. I bought several of the issues he had on display. You can check out the entire series over at Hungry Tiger Press: http://www.hungrytigerpress.com/

New piece I did for my church. Part of a three-week sermon series on the Miracles of Jesus. The first week’s message was about Peter and Jesus walking on water, and what to do when you face “storms” in life. Sumi ink on Bristol 9x1…
